Shadow Weave in Polychrome with Sarah Fortin

Skill Level

Required Skills:

  • All levels.  Must be able to read a draft and dress a 4 or 8 shaft loom.

Class Length

  • 2.5 Day Workshop (Friday am thru Sunday noon)

Shadow weave is a visually graphic and exciting weave structure, but may also be a stable, yet fluid fabric. It is a wonderful structure to use for clothing as well as home décor. Explore the numerous opportunities for creating beautiful cloth when using more than two colors or textures while weaving this structure. Using the Powell method of shadow weave as inspiration, we will use Harrisville Shetland yarns as our base color, designing color gamps, dressing the looms and weaving samples for creating a variety of fabrics with one draft and one warp (cotton yarn is also suitable).  Students will work in a round robin fashion so as to explore several drafts and colors. From these samples we will design a project that may be woven at home. Many samples and slides will be used for illustration.
