Description

Create a traditional sweetgrass basket that can be utilized in multiple ways. Whether a beginner or experienced, this class will allow you to put your imagination to use. Sweetgrass baskets are coiled with Sweetgrass and Southern long-leaf pine needles and lashed with strips of palmetto. Techniques taught will enable the students to design a variety of shapes and sizes of Sweetgrass baskets. This is an art form stemming from West Africa over 300 years ago. NO WATER REQUIRED. Students bring scissors ONLY, additional tools will be provided during class.

Registration Fees are paid when you register to attend the FTWG Conference. Materials fees are paid directly to the instructor at the beginning of class. You should plan to pay the materials fee in cash.

Instructor Bio

Barbara was born and raised in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina where she learned the trade of sweetgrass basket weaving from her grandmother, mother, aunts, and other family members at a very early age. She has since carried on this tradition and has shared her talent with others including her family. Barbara teaches several classes along the East Coast and has her work displayed in several publications including: “Row Upon Row: Seagrass Baskets of the Lowcountry,” a documentary, “Grass Roots: The Enduring Art of the Lowcountry Basket,” as well as the Kaminsky House (Georgetown, SC) and McKissick Museum (Columbia, SC) just to name a few. Sweetgrass basket weaving is an art form that came from West Africa over 300 years ago during slavery.
