This workshop will introduce the beginner to the ancient native art of pine needle basketry. Intermediate weavers will have an opportunity to learn new stitches and open coiling techniques. Friday: Military Themed Basket or Wall Hanging. Laser engraved center in student's choice of military branch: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard. Makes a great gift for a military person, active or vet, to say “Thank you for your service”. Saturday: Freeform Basket with Agate or Geode Stone Center. Create a free form basket of your imagination around a beautiful gemstone slice. Sunday: Making a Cabochon Basket Center. Learn to mount a cabochon stone on vinyl to make a center for a basket. Finish by making a small pine needle basket around your cabochon center.

Materials Fee Includes:

Prepared basket centers, waxed threads, sinew, pine needles, beeswax, copper gauges, needle, and handouts.

Registration Fees are paid when you register to attend the FTWG Conference. Materials fees are paid directly to the instructor at the beginning of class. You should plan to pay the materials fee in cash.

Students to Bring

  • Everything is supplied, but feel free to bring your favorite coiling tools.

Instructor Bio

Barb graduated from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and holds degrees in Advertising Design and Fashion Illustration. She spent most of her career as Senior Art Director for Belks department stores where she produced catalogs and directed photo shoots. In 1996 she discovered Pine Needle Basketry and now enjoys teaching others at basketry and gourd events throughout the southeast.
