2026 Warping Front to Back

Warping Front to Back tying on a Dummy Warp with Mary Schmutte

Warping Front to Back
tying on a Dummy Warp
with Mary Schmutte

This mini session is a demonstration of how to warp your loom from the front tying on to an existing warp you already have threaded on your loom. I will demonstrate this using multiple “warp-lets” (small warps) in multiple colors which total 150 threads.

I will take you through the full process from setting up the warps on the loom to be tied on to the completion of rolling on the warp the cloth beam and getting ready to weave.

Often you will see a pattern or instructions reference the use of a “dummy warp”. This is a short warp usually only 1 yard long, that is put on to your loom prior to your main project. It’s fully threaded and through the reed. You can then use this warp to easily place colors in certain location in your pattern. I often use this method of warping if I have just finished weaving a very complex draft that I want to try in a different color arrangement.
