4 Shaft Beginning Weaving
with Mary Schmutte
Students will learn about floor/table loom basics, planning a project, how to make a warp, dress the loom and weave twill mug rugs 5” wide.
This class will be taught using 8/2 cotton for better visibility of how the threads interact with each other when treadled in different twill threading patterns. Instructor will supply pre-made warp chains, providing students with more time to learn and explore the weaving process.
In this 2.5 day class, students will need to bring their 4 shaft loom either table or floor looms are good with a 10 dent reed. The loom must be in good working order. We won’t have time to fix a loom in this class.
We will start the class with a discussion and explanation of the parts of a loom and how they function. Learn how to read and follow a draft, plan a project, learn about and figure project sett, and make a warp.
Warp the loom front to back will be covered in this class. Students will dress their loom with the warp chains that are provided by the instructor, these warps will be made of 8/2 pearl cotton 102 threads 3 yards long.
We will discuss different options for treadling twills and what happens when they are treadled differently.
Everyone will get their project threaded and have woven mug rugs before the end of the class.
