2026 Kumihimo Braids Immersion

Kumihimo Braids Immersion
with Adrienne Gaskell

In this comprehensive kumihimo class, you’ll use a marudai and learn to master essential and advanced techniques for three braiding styles: Fiber Braids, Beaded Kongoh Braids, and Beads as Fiber Braids.

Fiber Braids: Dive into the intriguing world of the Oimatsu 16-strand braid. Students will explore the many unique aspects that this captivating braid offers. After many years of experimentation, I continue to be fascinated by the versatility and beauty of Oimatsu, and I’m excited to share my discoveries and insights with you. Although this braid typically uses 16-tama, less experienced students can start with an 8-tama version to build their skills before advancing.

Beaded Kongoh Braids: The technique of integrating beads into the braid as it is being formed creates supple, beautiful bead ropes that are perfect for creating exquisite jewelry, purse handles and more. You will learn how to select beads and appropriate cords, seamlessly incorporate focal beads, and braid around an inner core support or armature. Students will learn various bead placement patterns and how to to create their own unique bead patterns using Adrienne’s grid planner.

Beads as Fiber Braids: Learn to craft stunning, fully beaded braids using long strands of beads. Almost any braid structure can be adapted for these, allowing your imagination to guide the design process. This technique results in flexible, beautiful braids that showcase the versatility of using bead strands as a braiding material.
