2026 Doubling Down on Doubleweave

There are several different ways to weave Doubleweave. There is Block Doubleweave, with its patterned square cells that are two sided. Sometimes these cells are stuffed to have a raised textured surface, like little squares of ravioli. There is Stitched Double Cloth that weaves with two layers of patterned fabric that are stitched or fused together so the layers do not separate. This makes a thick and durable fabric. Then there is the double layered Doubleweave that allows you to weave double width fabric or tubes of fabric. This is the Doubleweave that we will be concentrating on in this workshop.

Imagine being able to weave a blanket or throw on a narrow loom. You are able to weave two separate layers of fabric that are joined on one side that becomes the center of the throw. When you are finished weaving and remove the piece from your loom, you can open the throw to a fabric that is twice the width that the warp was on the loom. Now how cool is that?

On the same warp you can also weave two separate layers that are joined on both selvedge sides and this produces a woven tube. Round and round the shuttle goes, weaving a perfect tubular fabric.

For this workshop, you will be weaving on a pre-warped loom. The instructions for warping will be sent to you prior to the workshop. You will be weaving two projects on the same warp. First, a dish towel or bread cloth that will teach you the basic fundamentals of double width fabric. Then for the second project, you will weave a bread bag. It will have a closed bottom, and then you will weave a tubular fabric for the body of the bag. At the top of your bag, you will learn how to make two separate woven tabs that make a hem that’s ready for a draw string closure.

I’ll even share my favorite bread recipe so you can bake a loaf for your new bread bag
