Pine Needle Basketry with Barbara Nelson

2.5 Day Workshop (Friday am thru Sunday noon)

Experienced Beginner.  Should know basic stitch & how to thread needle.

Class Description

This workshop will introduce the beginner to the ancient native art of pine needle basketry. Intermediate weavers will have an opportunity to learn new stitches and open coiling techniques.

Friday: Military Themed Basket or Wall Hanging. Laser engraved center in student’s choice of military branch: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard. Makes a great gift for a military person, active or vet, to say “Thank you for your service”.

Saturday: Freeform Basket with Agate or Geode Stone Center. Create a free form basket of your imagination around a beautiful gemstone slice.

Sunday: Making a Cabochon Basket Center. Learn to mount a cabochon stone on vinyl to make a center for a basket. Finish by making a small pine needle basket around your cabochon center.

Instructor Biography

Barb attended the Art Institute of Ft Lauderdale and holds degrees in Advertising Design & Fashion Illustration. She spent most of her career as Sr. Art Director for Belk Dept. Stores where she designed catalogs and directed fashion photo shoots.  In 2004 she was introduced to pine needle basket coiling and gourd art and soon after began teaching at basket and gourd venues in the southeast.  Barb’s Etsy shop, artgalstudio.etsy.com, where you can find waxed threads and sinew, basket centers, kits, and dyed and natural pine needles when in season.

Materials Fee

$30 for prepared basket centers, waxed threads / sinew, pine needles, beeswax, copper gauges, needle, and handouts.

Materials Fees are not collected as part of registration.  They are paid directly to the instructor at the beginning of class.

Students to Bring

Everything is supplied but feel free to bring your favorite coiling tools.
